However, over the past five years, its crime rate has risen sharply. Offenses, including pickpocketing, burglaries, and assaults, including violent and armed robberies, are on the rise. Sexual assaults are also increasing, with women traveling alone advised to be especially vigilant.

This increase in violence mainly concerns the islands of Santiago (where Praia is located), São Vicente, Santo Antão and Brava.

In terms of safety for tourists, the situation in Cape Verde, particularly on the most touristy islands like Sal and Boa Vista, remains less dangerous than some African megacities infamous for their extreme insecurity.

Praia, the capital and most populated city, is the epicenter of petty crime. Authorities and locals recommend increased caution in the following areas:
