My impressions of the island of Java
On arrival at JAKARTA, we took a domestic flight to YOGYAKARTA. Indeed, we did not want to stay in this megalopolis of 31,7 million inhabitants (large Jakarta) and preferred to take advantage of our time to visit YOGYAKARTA and thus get closer to the two mythical volcanoes of JAVA: BROMO and IJEN.
My favorites in Java
Volcanoes BROMINE et IJEN and especially the JAVANESE !
Indeed, it was at JAVA that I felt the most welcome (compared to BALI et GILI AIR). Javanese are overly nice and adore westerners.
We easily came into contact with the local population without much effort: at our Guest House, the owner came specially to meet us. We were able to talk with him at length and generally discussed the country's economy, religion, social security coverage for Indonesians... He was available, helpful and very open to discussion.
Ditto for Labina who worked at the Guest House: she talked a lot with us. We had real exchanges and were able to appreciate all the small gestures she made especially to facilitate our stay.
For example, she came to accompany us to dinner in a restaurant that she recommended to us for fear that we might get lost… She reserved an UBER for us because we did not have internet in town. And she even shared our moment of madness in the illuminated cars.
Our guide was also Javanese and showed, through his involvement and our daily reports throughout the trip, kindness and benevolence. He knew how to contact his friends to make us enjoy (by organizing things the day before for the next day) a national event (national festival of Java dances) in the best conditions (in VIP) !!!
What can we say about the altruism shown by this stranger whom we met at the bend of the Water Palace and who made us discover his city in an original and improbable way… He was completely disinterested and only sought to satisfy our curiosity and that to give us the image of a magnificent city that we will keep preciously in our memories of Indonesia ... He ended up accompanying us to the restaurant "Water Palace Café" because we were unable to get there by ourselves.
Men and women pass you in the street and greet you with a frank and sincere smile. It is the only place where I knew this experience because it is indeed a novelty when one comes from Western countries ...
I was also able to have a real exchange with a carrier of sulfur at the volcano KAWAH IJEN. By declining his paid photo proposal, I started a dialogue that began with general questions… Then I bought him a piece of sulfur and asked other questions. He was not curious but I think that since the time, he has identified the Westerners well and that he put us in the same bag. Anyway, I felt he was proud that people were interested in him and his work. Finally before leaving him because he had to continue to carry his burden, he wanted to take a photo on which he displayed an unformatted smile and which made me feel good!
The photo below shows the joy and pride Javanese people have in being with us.
The photo below taken at random on a street in Yogyakarta is a good illustration of the spontaneous and selfless smile of the Javanese:
