Sardinia by motorhome – 15-day itinerary in Sardinia + map

You program a Sardinia road trip and looking for an itinerary for a 15-day motorhome tour? So maybe my 15 day road trip in Sardinia can inspire you to plan your trip.

I share with you below, step by step, the organization of my motorhome tour: Choice of crossing, tourist and seaside stages and detailed itinerary with Google Map.

Road trip in Sardinia by motorhome

Just like for my road trip in Greece, I wondered about the best option to do a 15-day road trip in Sardinia:

  • Plane + car rental + hotels and restaurants
  • Car from the start + ferry + hotels and restaurants
  • Plane + motorhome rental

For those who have their own motorhome, the best option is of course to leave with your motorhome and take the ferry.

For those who do not have one, the plane option + on-site camping car rental is the most interesting (especially during certain periods when plane tickets are cheaper).

Indeed, not only is this type of trip more interesting on a budget level, but it gives you the opportunity to enjoy the tourist sites and the most beautiful beaches of Sardinia as close as possible. Not only do you save time and money, but you also camp in simply sublime places (sometimes in the wild in the off season or in superb campsites in the middle of summer).

How to get to Sardinia by Ferry?

For those who take their own motorhome or who travel with their car, they can reach Sardinia by ferry from Italy, France or Spain. The shortest crossing is from Italy in just over 6 hours (Civitavecchia – Olbia). You can book your tickets online at DirectFerry or Tirrenia.

Where to rent a motorhome in Sardinia?

On the same principle as Airbnb apartment rentals, many platforms offer the rental of motorhomes and vans between individuals such as wikicampers.fr, Yescapa or indiecampers.fr.

Otherwise, you have a few motorhome rental professional sites (motorhomerepublic.com, campstar.com, campanda.fr) that will offer you rentals to pick up at Olbia in the North of Sardinia.

This is ideal because it is probably at the international airport of Olbia that you will arrive by plane.

It is a safe and economical way to rent a motorhome. Personally, I use motorhomerepublic.com just like for the 2nd part of my australia road trip and everything went very well.

What to see in Sardinia in 15 days?

Of course you can't visit all of Sardinia in just 2 weeks, but 15 days of road trip still allow you to discover:

  • the typical landscapes of Sardinia and its charming little villages,
  • many archaeological remains,
  • Sardinian culture, identity and gastronomy,
  • its nature and its panoramas between rocky coasts, cliffs, plains, vineyards and high plateaus of cork oaks,
  • the splendid archipelago of Maddalena classified by UNESCO in 1994,
  • but above all its most beautiful beaches which have nothing to envy to caribbean beaches !

Sardinia itinerary 15 days

Here are the main stages of my 15-day tour in Sardinia. This route forms a loop circuit that starts from Olbia and ends there. This makes it easier to rent and return your vehicle in Olbia or to start this tour when your flight or ferry arrives.

I hesitated for a long time on the direction of the circuit and finally, I saved the best for the end with the seaside on the Costa Smeralda and the discovery of the island of Maddalena.

  • Olbia (arrival port or airport)
  • Castelsardo
  • Stintino
  • Pelosa Beach
  • Alghero
  • Bossa Village
  • Is Arutas Beach
  • Su Nuraxi website
  • orgosolo
  • Gulf of Orosei
  • Maddalena Archipelago
  • Emerald Coast beaches (Costa Smeralda)
  • Olbia (return port or airport)

Sardinia by motorhome – Program

Here is the summary of my 15-day road trip in Sardinia in a motorhome:

North West Sardinia – Days 1 and 2

Leaving from the city of Olbia, you will start your circuit by crossing the North West of Sardinia to reach the village of Castelsardo. It is a magnificent perched medieval village from where you will have a spectacular view of the Gulf of Asinara. Classified among the 100 most beautiful towns in Italy, it has preserved its ancient ramparts and its castle.

STAGE OF MY TOUR OF SARDINIA IN A CAMPING CAR

Then the circuit continues towards the village of Stintino (45 minute drive). It is an old fishing village where the houses are typical because painted with pastel colors. The site is magnificent but the essential is the magnificent Pelosa beach and its Spanish tower: It's the postcard of Sardinia!

West Coast of Sardinia – Days 3 and 4

My road trip continues with the visit of the small port of Alghero which is a 1 hour drive from Stintino. You can admire the remains of ancient fortifications, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the coral museum and the church of Saint Michel.

You can enjoy the beautiful beach of Maria Pia and take a boat trip to explore the famous Neptune Caves. Remember to book on the site algheroexperience.it

Bosa Village and Is Arutas Beach – Days 5 to 7

Leaving from Alghero, it takes approximately 1h30 to reach the village of Bosa. This village is famous for its pastel-colored houses, its wrought iron balconies, the narrow streets and its castle of Serravalle also called castle of Malaspina like that of Corsica. It is a 12th century fortress which houses the small church of Regnos Altos.

Village of Bosa stage of my 15-day tour in Sardinia

After the village of Bosa, there is an essential beach in Sardinia to discover: The beach Arutas. This beach is unlike any other beach in Sardinia, it is nicknamed Rice grain beach. Indeed, it is unique because it is covered with white quartz which gives the water incredible shades of blue.

To get there, you will pass the village of Narbolia where there is a very nice camping area.

Also in the area is Tharros which is a very important archaeological site. It is located in the municipality of Cabras, near Oristano. Continuing on the Sinis peninsula, you will discover the Capo San Marco with its Spanish tower. Take advantage of wild beaches of San Giovanni surrounded by magnificent unspoiled nature.

The nuragic site of Su Nuraxi of Barumini and Oristano – Day 8

For this 8th day of your road trip in Sardinia, you can visit the pretty and lively town ofOristano which is an ancient medieval city.

Then, I recommend that you drive about 1h30 to the site of Su Nuraxi by Barumini. By taking a guided tour (about 1 hour), you will discover one of the oldest civilizations in the Mediterranean with, among other things, megalithic remains of the best preserved ancient villages in Europe and an imposing fortress.

On this 2nd day of road trip in Sardinia, you will leave Orosei to discover the village of Orogosolo. Located at the foot of Mount Lisogorni, this town can be reached in 1 hour by car.

Orgosolo – Day 9

It will take about 2 hours by road to reach the village of Orgosolo. This village is famous for its murals made in memory of the fights and the commitments of the villagers. The first walls were painted by a group of anarchists in 1960.

Gulf of Orosei – Days 10 to 12

From Orgosolo, it takes 1 hour to drive to the Palmasera beach in the Gulf of Oresei. In fact, you will have a camping area because 200 meters from the beach!

To discover all wonders of the Gulf of Orosei (wild beaches, sea caves, creeks), I recommend that you take a boat trip to go to the best spots:

  • Bue Marino Caves
  • Cala Luna (the most photographed cove in Sardinia)
  • Plage Goloritze (see below),
  • Coves of Mariolu and factory
cala goloritzè STAGE OF MY TOUR

La Cala Goloritzè is one of the most beautiful beaches in Sardinia. It is located south of Cala Biriola which is also a splendid beach!

Costa Smeralda – Days 12 to 14

To complete your 15 day itinerary in Sardinia, my tour takes you to the most beautiful part of Sardinia : On the Emerald Coast or Costa Smeralda. You will find many campsites and simply sublime beaches there.

You will be in the Gallura region and can visit archaeological sites around Arzachena (necropolis of Li Muri, Albucciu, Malchittu, tomb of the giants of Coddu Vecchiu), the pretty villages of San Pantaleo, Liscia di Vacca, Capriccioli, Arzachena, Romazzino or the very chic town of Porto Cervo.

Finally, I also recommend that you discover the Maddalena archipelago by taking a beautiful day cruise:

Maddalena Island North East of Sardinia at the end of my 2 week road trip in Sardinia

Olbia – Day 15

Return to Olbia to take the ferry or your flight. Depending on the time you have left, you can take the opportunity to visit the city (historic center with its Romanesque basilica, its aqueduct and its archaeological museum).
