Buenos Aires, the birthplace of tango, is a true sanctuary for fans of this emblematic dance of the Argentine capital.
Every evening, the milongas, these dance halls dedicated to tango, come alive to the rhythm of steps and captivating melodies. These dance evenings take place in ballrooms or clubs in the city center.
During my travel to Argentina, to discover the tango culture, I preferred to choose a milonga rather than going to a professional tango show.
In fact, I preferred to discover the electric atmosphere, charged with emotion and passion of a milonga rather than the conventional atmosphere of the big shows for tourists.
But with so many options available, how do you choose a milonga that offers a truly authentic experience?
Whether you are a tourist, a novice or a tango enthusiast visiting Buenos Aires, this article will guide you through the best milongas in the city. Thus, you will be able to discover places where the soul of tango is revealed in all its depth for a more authentic tourist experience.

Why choose a milonga in Buenos Aires?
Attending a milonga is not just a tourist activity, it is a true immersion in the porteña culture (that of the inhabitants of Buenos Aires). It is an opportunity to discover the very essence of this vibrant city and to soak up its captivating rhythm.
Unlike shows aimed at tourists (which are excessively expensive), a milonga is an authentic place where tango is lived and felt rather than simply watched.
In fact, unlike tango shows, milongas are deeply rooted in the history of Buenos Aires. They have their origins in the early 20th century, when European immigrants, mainly Italian and Spanish, brought with them their musical and dance traditions. These diverse cultural influences mixed with local rhythms, giving birth to tango.
Initially, milongas were informal gatherings in popular neighborhoods of the city, where people gathered to dance and socialize. Over time, they became more structured events, with specific rules and dress codes.
Today, milongas are an integral part of Buenos Aires' cultural heritage, attracting local dancers of all ages and backgrounds as well as enthusiasts from around the world.

The milonga I chose in the afternoon
After all this research, I decided to discover the milonga THE KISS and it was a great choice because I loved watching these passionate dancers (we were the only tourists).
I went there one afternoon: Entrance 6 pesos (around €000) per person with tango lessons for all levels at 5 p.m. and milonga at 14 p.m. until the end of the afternoon.

El Beso is a traditional tango house located at 416 Riobamba and one of the most authentic venues in Buenos Aires. It offers an authentic tango experience 365 days a year, every afternoon and evening.

Unlike some more touristy milongas, El Beso tends to maintain stricter codes in terms of dress and respect for tango traditions. The level of dancing is generally high, attracting experienced and passionate dancers.
Participants dance without pre-established choreography in an intimate atmosphere while following codes such as the cabeceo (invitation by a look).
The milonga takes place in the traditional manner, punctuated by tandas (musical sequences) and cortinas (pauses between sequences).

Buenos Aires is full of legendary milongas, each with its own unique atmosphere and charm. Here are some of the most popular milongas to discover during a stay in the Argentine capital:
El Viejo Almacen in the San Telmo neighborhood
Located in the historic San Telmo neighborhood, El Viejo Almacen is one of the oldest milongas in Buenos Aires. Its nostalgic atmosphere and worn wooden floors will transport you to another era. It is also where you can discover a real tango show.
The Cathedral in the Almagro district
La Catedral is an iconic milonga known for its warm and festive atmosphere. Passionate dancers and wild tango shows will make you vibrate to the rhythm of the music. Be careful though, this milonga is located in a Buenos Aires neighborhood little frequented by tourists.

Located in the trendy Palermo neighborhood, Salon Canning is a contemporary milonga that attracts a younger, hipper crowd. Here, tango is mixed with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, offering a unique experience for dance lovers.
El Motivo in the chic Recoleta neighborhood
For a more sophisticated and elegant milonga experience, head to El Motivo in the upscale Recoleta neighborhood. This upscale milonga will seduce you with its refined decor and distinguished atmosphere, without sacrificing the essence of the tango porteño.
How to prepare for a milonga?
Attending a milonga is not just a tourist activity, it is a true cultural experience. Here are some tips to best prepare yourself and fully enjoy this unique experience:
- Choose your outfit carefully : Milongas often have a specific dress code. For men, it is best to wear trousers and a smart shirt. For women, a long dress or skirt and comfortable shoes are appropriate.
- Respect the label : Milongas have their own rules and codes of conduct. Observe other dancers carefully and don't hesitate to ask locals for advice. Respect and courtesy are required.
- Be open-minded : A milonga is a unique and authentic experience. Let yourself be immersed in the atmosphere, the rhythms and the emotions. Be open to encounters and cultural exchanges.
- Do not disturb the dancers : A milonga evening is an ephemeral experience. Rather than filming or taking selfies non-stop, savor every moment, every dance step and every note of music. This way, you won’t disturb the dancers and will better enjoy this moment of conviviality.
Meeting the porteños at the milongas
One of the best ways to have an authentic milonga experience is to meet and interact with the locals. Porteños are known for their hospitality and passion for tango, and they will be happy to introduce you to their culture.
During my visit to the El Beso milonga, I was able to engage in conversation with the local dancers. They were happy to explain the intricacies of tango, sharing their stories and anecdotes.
These authentic encounters will not only allow you to discover a hidden side of Buenos Aires, but also to leave with precious memories. You could be invited by one of them, which would be an unforgettable experience!
