How to visit Réunion in 15 days – Itinerary, map, advice

How to visit Reunion? You have a travel project on Reunion Island and are looking for how to visit the most beautiful sites, how to make the most beautiful hikes?

Here is how I visited Reunion in 15 days in August 2022: Tour of the island, essential steps, itinerary, map, hikes, visits and budget.

Visit Reunion in 15 days: My circuit with itinerary of the essentials

Is August a good time to visit Reunion?

This is the question I asked myself before booking my plane tickets. I knew August was the perfect month to see the whales in Reunion, but what about the weather?

First of all, it must be said that in August in Reunion, the day rises around 6 a.m. and sets around 18 p.m. So, you have to get up early to fully enjoy the day. Especially since on the mountain ranges or in the 3 cirques, from 14:00 p.m. the clouds fall and everything is covered very quickly. As a result, the hikes must be done in the morning because the afternoon is very compromised for the landscapes.

In terms of weather, in August, we had temperatures between 20 and 27°C on the coast and between 4 and 12°C at altitude. As you can see, the temperature variation is great depending on where you are on the island. During the 15 days, we had no rain except at 6:00 am at the foot of Piton de la Fournaise. In fact, August is one of the driest months of the year.

The weather report of our trip to Reunion in August is therefore positive because we had perfect temperatures for hiking as well as the heat and the sun at the edge of the lagoon!

Is visiting Reunion Island in 2 weeks enough?

Visiting Reunion in 15 days is the ideal timing to discover the emblematic sites and unmissable visits of the island. Of course a few more days would have been appreciated but 2 full weeks already allow you to have an overview of the Reunion.

Indeed, with good organization and an optimized itinerary (see details and map below), it is possible to complete a tour of the island in 15 days and do the most legendary hikes.

How to visit Reunion in 2 weeks?

The best way to visit Reunion is to rent a car for a road trip. You can go around the island by car by planning stopover hotels around which you can flit.

Indeed, Reunion Island is relatively small and has beautiful, well-maintained roads. As a result, it is easy to visit Reunion by car. This is how we visited the island in 15 days of road-trip.

What to see in Reunion in 15 days?

To discover this island, I have only selected visits to the most beautiful places in Reunion. These are very varied: Viewpoints, small villages, hikes, volcanoes, waterfalls and of course beautiful beaches! And to go around the island, I programmed them to do a loop circuit.

Here are the main sites that can be discovered by following my 15-day itinerary in Reunion:

Reunion in 15 days – Travel diary

Here are all the visits of our road trip detailed in the order of our itinerary for each day of our trip:

Visit the North East of Reunion – Day 1

We arrive with our Air France flight AF642 at 10am at Saint Denis airport. I had booked with booking.com a Budget rental car (€1 full insurance included) which we picked up very quickly at the airport.

Day 1 program

Here are the stages of our first day in Reunion which take us to the heart of the Cirque de Salazie:

  • Niagara Falls
  • Beef basin – Girondin basin – Nicole basin
  • White Waterfall
  • Village of Salazie
  • Bridal Veil Waterfall
  • Installation at our hotel in Hell-Bourg

Itinerary North East of Reunion – Cirque de Salazie

Niagara Falls

1st stop at the Niagara Falls which is a 10 minute drive from the airport. We pass through sugar cane fields and find that we are in the middle of the sugar campaign. This is the period when the people of Reunion cut the cane. A few photos of the waterfall and we take the road to the Cirque de Salazie.

Niagara waterfall on Reunion Island

Beef basin – Girondin basin – Nicole basin

I had planned to discover 3 other waterfalls very close to the Niagara waterfall but I must admit that with the night spent on the plane, I was not at my best for hiking.

However, I am telling you below how to discover the Bassin Boeuf, the Bassin Girondin and the Bassin Nicole:

  • Go and park your car at the Bassin Boeuf car park. Then on foot, you will take a small path on the left and will arrive at the 1st basin after 5 to 10 minutes of walking.
  • Passing to the left of the waterfall, you reach the Grondin basin which is located 300 meters above the 1st basin.
  • To access the 3rd basin, you must return to the car park and follow the opposite direction. On the far right, there are the signs, stairs that you will have to go down. Thus, you will reach the river. By taking the path on the right, you go up the stream which takes you to Bassin Nicole.

White Waterfall

My route takes us on a magnificent road that follows intense green gorges. The reliefs are dotted with magnificent and large waterfalls and covered with vegetable christophines that the people of Reunion call darlings. Bright green foliage and scarlet flowers give incredible colors to the mountains.

fields of christophines

Before arriving at the spectacular waterfalls of the Veil of the Bride, you can take a photo break at the 640-meter high White Waterfall (3rd highest waterfall in France).

If you want to admire it a little closer, you can park in the parking lot of the restaurant La White Waterfall. From there, take the stairs and follow a small path on the left. In 45 minutes you will approach the waterfall.

Taking the road again, towards Salazie, a few meters further on is the Pisse en l'air waterfall which also deserves a little photo:

Sign indicating the Pisse en l'air waterfall

Bridal Veil Waterfalls

A few hundred meters further on, the essential stage of the Cirque de Salazie is the stop at the waterfalls of Bridal Veil. To know the legend, I invite you to go to the official site of theReunion tourist office.

Bridal veil waterfalls in the Cirque de Salazie

We continue our itinerary to arrive at the village of Hell-Bourg which we will visit tomorrow morning.

At the end of the afternoon, we settle down in our small hotel in Hell-Bourg: The Peaks Relay. In the heart of the village, it is a historic hotel that is a bit old-fashioned but offers a very warm welcome and delicious breakfasts!!!

Visit the Cirque de Salazie – Day 2

Day 2 program

Here are the stages of our 2nd day of our Reunion tour in 15 days:

  • Visit of the village of Hell-Bourg
  • Road to Bé Maho for a view of the Cirque de Salazie
  • Road to Grand îlet and hotel installation

Day 2 itinerary map

Our route for this 2nd day is not very long (28 km) but it is magnificent and takes us as close as possible to the Cirque de Mafate.

The morning program is the visit of the village ofHell-Bourg ranked among the most beautiful villages in France. It is a very charming little town with pretty Creole houses of all colors and beautiful residences from the colonial era where the thermal baths attracted the upper middle class of the island.

Visit of the Hell-Bourg village during our 15-day tour in Reunion

Among these beautiful residences, we visited the Maison Folio and the Maison Morange:

Visit of the Folio House

The Folio house or Folio villa is typical of colonial dwellings from the end of the 19th century. The great bourgeois came to take refuge in the circus of Salazie to be cooler, especially in summer.

The visit to the house is not extraordinary, however I fell in love with its magnificent tropical garden (registered with the ISMH).

Folio house tropical garden

Visit of Maison Morange (Museum of music and instruments of the Indian Ocean)

Maison Morange is an old colonial residence overlooking the village of Hell-Bourg. It houses the Museum of Music and Instruments of the Indian Ocean. This Museum is splendid with a collection of 1500 traditional instruments of European, African, Indian, Indonesian, Chinese and Malagasy origin.

Visit Reunion in 15 days with Maison Morange

The weather being clear, we make a small detour by the Bé Maho road to enjoy a view of the Cirque de Salazie. The belvedere is located at 1045 meters:

Belvedere Bé Maho in my circuit Reunion in 15 days

Then we take the road back towards our accommodation near the circus of Mafate in Grand îlet: O heart of the island.

This accommodation has an ideal location for hiking in the cirque of Mafate (Col des Boeufs only 9 km away). The 2 assets of this accommodation: the panoramic view (see photo below) and the welcome of the owner.

In addition, there is a restaurant (chez Serge) in the house next door where you can eat delicious local dishes on site or to take away.

Visit the Cirque de Mafate – Day 3

Day 3 program

Our circuit "Reunion in 15 days" will allow us to discover the Cirque de Mafate by hiking which leads to the small town: La Nouvelle.

Be careful because this hike represents almost 20 kilometers (round trip) with 600 meters of elevation on the descent and therefore for the return 600 meters of elevation to go up! I blew my pedometer:

pedometer on hike Cirque de Mafate

If I had to do it again, I think I would have booked a rental to sleep at La Nouvelle and thus do the hike in 2 days.

Cirque de Mafate hiking map

Here is the explanatory panel for the hikes in the Cirque de Mafate (including the one up to La Nouvelle that I did):

Visit Réunion in 15 days and hike in the Cirque de Mafate

Cirque de Mafate hike

To do this hike, you must leave very early in order to enjoy the spectacular views. Indeed, in the afternoon everything is covered and the show is much more bland!

So, we left our accommodation at 5am to arrive at daybreak in the parking lot. Arrived up there, we do not regret the pillow:

View from the Col des Boeufs

From the car park, take the wide path that goes up to the Col des Boeufs, then the path on the left which only goes down for almost 1 hour. We finally arrive at the Plaine des Tamarins and at the intersection of the GR towards La Nouvelle or towards Marla. We hesitated: La Nouvelle or Marla?

The hike to Marla is technically much more difficult, we were told. Suddenly, direction La Nouvelle that we will reach after a little more than 1 hour of walking.

The return is slower (3 hours) because you have to take the same path in the opposite direction and therefore end with a long and very tiring climb! See details on: Mafate circus hike.

When you arrive at La Nouvelle, don't miss a spectacular belvedere. You have to take a small path that passes behind the lodgings of the fund and after 15 minutes of walking you arrive at this point of view:

After this beautiful hike, it is with joy that we returned to rest in Grand îlet in our accommodation. O heart of the island.

The Laves route – Day 4

For this 4nd day of our 15-day circuit in Reunion, we are going to do the Route des Laves in the South East of the island with some very nice stops.

Program Day 4

Here are the stages of our circuit which starts from the Cirque de Salazie, passes by the lava road to end in Saint Pierre:

  • Vanilla cooperative in Bras Banon
  • Point of view on Takamaka
  • Church of Saint Anne
  • Cascades Cove
  • Lava route (hike to the lava flows from 2007 + stop at the lava flows from 2001 to 2004)
  • Cap villain in Saint-Philippe
  • Langevin Waterfall
  • Grande Anse Beach
  • Hotel in Saint Pierre

Laves route map

Visits in the East and South East of Reunion

We leave very early in the morning because we have to drive almost 180 kilometers during the day with many visits. Here is the detail of our visits following the order of our itinerary:

Vanilla cooperative in Bras Banon

We asked the owner of our O Coeur de l'Ile accommodation: Where can you buy the best vanilla from Reunion Island? She replied: “Especially not in the markets. To buy premium vanilla, you have to go to Bras Banon at the Pro Vanille Cooperative. »

It is therefore on this advice that we visited the Cooperative and bought the pods for all the family and friends!

Takamaka Viewpoint and Waterfalls

The 2nd stage of our circuit takes us to the Takamaka Viewpoint which is in the same place as a hydroelectric plant. Indeed, the Takamaka dam with this plant which is 300 meters underground can supply more than 35 homes with electricity.
From the belvedere, we have a breathtaking panorama:

Takamaka stage of our visit to Reunion in 15 days

Church of Sainte-Anne in Reunion

Continuing our route, on the roadside, you can admire a surprising church for its architecture (mixture of Baroque style and Gaudian style): the Church of Sainte-Anne.

EAST of Reunion visit of the Church of Sainte-Anne

Visit Reunion – Anse des Cascades

In Sainte-Rose, you can make a short stop at Anse des Cascades. It is a beautiful beach on the mountainside from which fall several pretty waterfalls. This natural site is very nice!

Visit Reunion in 2 weeks with Anse des Cascades

Lava road

By continuing the RN2 in the direction of Saint-Philippe, you will be able to observe on the side of the road the flows of 1977, 2001, 2004 and the flow of 2007. For the latter, I recommend that you park your car to take the short hike along the lava path.

Visit Reunion in 15 days with a hike on the lava trail

Cap villain in Saint-Philippe

We are now in the South of Reunion. In Saint-Philippe, along the jagged coast is the Cap Villain. Following the lava flows, it is made up of black, hard and compact basalt which plunges into the Indian Ocean.

Cap Méchant in Saint-Philippe in the south of Reunion

Langevin Waterfall

To go to the Cascade de Langevin, you have to make a small detour in the direction of Grand Galet. It is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Reunion. Unfortunately, the sky had clouded over when we got there. So the colors weren't as spectacular as some pictures on the internet.

15 days in Reunion with Stopover at the Cascade de Langevin

A little further down from the waterfall, going down on foot, you will find two basins with translucent waters: the Jar basin and the Zhirondelles basin.

Grande Anse Beach

Last step before our arrival in Saint-Pierre: Grande Anse beach.

Grande anse beach in Reunion

Yes it is beautiful but it is not a paradise beach. I preferred the beaches around Saint-Gilles much more, such as the sublime Hermitage beach and its lagoon.

Hotel in Saint Pierre

We arrive at the end of the afternoon in Saint-Pierre and settle down in theHotel Villa Delisle. Despite a fairly high price, I chose it because it faces Saint-Pierre beach and has a swimming pool. But I must tell you that I was very disappointed with this hotel.

It does not have direct access to the beach because it is separated by a large avenue where there is a lot of traffic. The swimming pool is also on the street with the noise of engines, horns, etc…

On the other hand, when I had booked on booking.com, nowhere was it specified that there was no bathroom. In fact there was a walk-in shower + sink in the bedroom next to the bed.
I reported it to management but they made no commercial gesture and simply said it was the architect's fault!!!
As a result, I do not recommend this hotel even if the services are of high quality, in particular the reception and the breakfasts.

Helicopter flight over Piton de la Fournaise – Day 5

Program Day 5

For this 5nd day of our Reunion tour in 15 days, we are going to make a dream come true: Fly over the Piton de la Fournaise volcano in a helicopter.

I had booked this overflight online in advance with Compagnie Mafate Hélicoptères. After several schedule changes sent by the company, we end up taking off from Pierrefonds Airport.

We are told that in fact it is the first flight in the morning at 1:6 a.m. which is the clearest and that thus we will see the crater from the helicopter. But in the end, everything was covered, a huge cloud was clinging to the reliefs and we saw NOTHING!

The worst thing is that they took the €410 (€205 per person) from us and no commercial gesture. A BLOW FOR NOTHING which cost us dearly… Here are the photos of what we glimpsed between the clouds:

The Piton de la Fournaise – Day 6

To go to Piton de la Fournaise, it is best to start from Plaine des Cafres and follow the volcano road which leads to Pas de Bellecombe.

So for the 6nd day of our trip to Reunion, we take the road towards the plain of Caffres where we have booked our hotel.

Indeed, today we are going to the volcano but have not planned to hike to the crater today. It's scheduled for the next day (day 7) because you have to get up at 4:30 am to start it around 5:45 am at sunrise. Having the trip from Saint-Pierre to do, the hike was not possible the same day.

Program Day 6

Here are the tourist stages on the road to the volcano:

  • Plain of Cafres
  • Belvedere of the Nez de Boeuf
  • Commerson Crater
  • plain of sands
  • No Bellecombe
PITON DE LA FOURNAISE essential in a 15-day circuit in Reunion

Volcano road route

What to see around the Piton de la Fournaise?

The road to the volcano is magnificent on a clear and clear day because the landscapes are atypical, evolving towards the desert and the lunar. Indeed, going towards the Piton de la Fournaise, you will make stops at belvederes with incredible panoramas.

The volcano road ends with a track of several kilometers which takes you opposite the Dolomieu crater (piton de la fournaise) to the car park of the No Bellecombe.

See some panoramas below:

To stay as close as possible to the volcano, you can book the Gîte du Volcan which is located less than 2 kilometers from the Bellecombe car park. But, it's small is usually full well in advance.

So I booked atHotel l'Ecrin. It's a good choice for one or two nights near the volcano (1 hour drive).

Visiting Reunion in 15 days allows you to devote a whole day to hiking the Piton de la Fournaise.

Piton de la Fournaise hike – Day 7

The Piton de la Fournaise hike consists of going from Pas de Bellecombe to the top of the volcano's crater. This is the Dolomieu trail which leads to the summit of the Volcano at an altitude of 2 m. This hike is generally done in 632 or 5 hours and 6 km of walking.

Program Day 7

This morning wake up at 4:30 am for 1 hour drive to arrive in the parking lot of Pas de Bellecombe at daybreak. We arrive at 5:40 am but under the clouds and the rain… We wait in the car for it to pass a bit and for it to clear up but no. After 2 hours of waiting, we resign ourselves to leaving without doing the mythical hike to the crater of Piton de la Fournaise.

Around the Plaine des Cafres – Day 8

Here are the visits and activities to do around the Plaine des Cafres:

Itinerary map Day 8

Le Bois Court Belvedere culminates at an altitude of 1400 m. It offers a view of the ramparts of Bras Sec, Sainte-Suzanne and Roches Noires.

Stage of my 15-day itinerary in Réunion at the Belvédère du Bois court

Access to the hike is from the belvedere, taking the small path on the left. After the village of Grand Bassin, the waterfall is 800 meters below. For the return you have to take the same path in the opposite direction. Count 5 to 5h30 round trip.

The road of 400 bends – Day 9

Program Day 9

  • Wake up early to go to the Cirque de Cilaos. The journey is done in 2 parts:
  1. by the road that joins La Rivière Saint Louis
  2. then by a mythical road of the island of Reunion: The road with 400 bends. 35 km long, it is a magnificent panoramic and winding road but also the only road that leads to Cilaos.
  • Visit of Cilaos

Itinerary map Day 9

Throughout the journey, the viewpoints and panoramas change at each bend with impressive reliefs and precipices.

Hotel Cirque de Cilaos

It is with great pleasure that we discover our hotel in Cilaos: theSnow Hotel.

Indeed, this hotel has a dream setting in the heart of the Circus and the village. The restaurant is very nice and cheap compared to others.

Le Day 10 of our Reunion tour in 15 days, will be devoted to discovering the Cirque de Cilaos (without making difficult hikes). The Cirque de Cilaos is located on the southern part of the Piton des Neiges massif (the largest volcano on Reunion Island today extinct). The Cirque de Cilaos will prove to be a real favorite for the beauty of its landscapes.

The Cirque de Cilaos – Day 10

Here is what you can see in the Cirque de Cilaos in 1 day:

  • La Roche Merveilleuse viewpoint + easy hike
  • Hike to the Cascade Fouquet (Fouquet trail)
  • Ilet à Cordes by the panoramic road

Itinerary Day 10

Visit Reunion – La Roche Merveilleuse

The 1st stage of this 10th day on Reunion Island is the point of view of The Wonderful Rock on the Cirque de Cilaos. From there, you can take a short, easy but not extraordinary hike.

La Roche Merveilleuse viewpoint on Cilaos

Fouquet Trail

On the road that leads to the village of Ilet à Cordes, you have to stop for a short hike to the Ferdinand-Fouquet waterfall. The start of the hike is not easy to find.

To find your way around, park near the 62 Bois Rouge bus stop. On the other side of the road, a sign indicates the path:

Start of the Fouquet trail on Reunion Island

After only 30 minutes of descent, you will arrive at the level of the basin with a pretty little waterfall. The translucent (but cold) water invites you to swim.

Waterfall Fouquet

The return is done by the same path but is a little more difficult because it is necessary to go up 200 meters of unevenness.

Cord Island

The road that leads to the small town of Ilet à Cordes is as beautiful and winding as the road of 400 bends. It offers equally impressive panoramas but from the other side of the mountain:

Back at the end of the daySnow Hotel to enjoy the pool!

Visit the West of Reunion – Day 11

To reach our hotel opposite the most beautiful beach in Reunion, we take the 400 bends road back to Saint Leu. Then we go along the west coast passing by the Gouffre de l'Etang salé.

Itinerary of day 11

Visit Reunion – Etang Salé chasm

Known for being the site of many suicides, the Gouffre de l'Etang salé is a crack in the black lava of a cliff where the waves of the Indian Ocean hit.

The power of the waves that enter this abyss makes the water spurt several meters high with impressive force and violence.

A small cemetery faces the abyss in homage to suicides or fishermen swept away by the ocean.

After this visit, we take the road to La Saline les Bains to settle in our superb hotel for 3 nights: The Nautile Beachfont

Hotel on the most beautiful beach in Reunion

Here is a hotel that I recommend if you want to enjoy the magnificent lagoon of Reunion. Just a 10-minute drive from Saint-Gilles, it's a charming little hotel where I had a great stay. The restaurant offers elaborate and delicious dishes at very reasonable prices.

  • St. Paul Market
  • Whale watching from the beach
  • Aquarium of Reunion
  • Black Rocks Beach
  • Hermitage Beach
  • Boucan Canot Beach

The Maido

Maïdo is a must when visiting Reunion. Very easily accessible by a road that climbs a winding pass, the Maïdo belvedere offers you one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Reunion. The best thing is to be there to admire the sunrise (5h45) because the panorama is simply sublime. Be careful to cover yourself well because at this time of day, it is very very cold…

View from the Maïdo Belvedere at sunrise

The Saint-Paul Market

On Friday, don't miss a trip to the Saint Paul market. This fairground market is located on the seafront and offers local products, spices, exotic fruits, vegetables but also crafts and souvenirs for tourists.

Next to the Saint-Paul market, you have a large pontoon that juts out over the ocean. This is the right plan for whale watching. They offer a fascinating spectacle!

Enjoy the beautiful beaches of Reunion

The most beautiful beaches of Reunion are in and around Saint-Gilles:

  • Hermitage Beach
  • Salines Beach
  • Black Rocks Beach
  • Boucan Canot Beach

On some you can simply sunbathe because swimming is regulated there depending on the location. Indeed, on certain beaches where there may be sharks, the municipality has installed anti-shark nets which delimit an authorized bathing perimeter.

Note that the sublime beaches of Salines and Hermitage are protected from sharks by the coral reef that forms the lagoon.

For our last day of our 15-day trip to Reunion, I had decided to visit Saint-Denis, the capital of Reunion.

Visit Saint-Denis de la Réunion – Day 14

Here are the main sites to visit in Saint Denis de la Réunion:

  • The starting point is located in Barachois – seafront and enjoy the view of the west coast of the island
  • Cathedral
  • Big market
  • Street of Paris :
    • n°14 Maison Carrere
    • n°18 Maison Mas (property of the general council)
    • No. 25 Villa Repiquet (1844)
    • #39 Angelic Villa
    • n°49 the Maison du Général, today called Villa de Région.
  • State Garden. Go around it, at the bottom a natural history museum and species of palm trees and trees typical of Reunion.
  • Rue Sainte Anne (arrival at the car park)

These tourist attractions can be visited on foot by following the route for which you will find the google maps map below:

Map to visit Saint-Denis de la Réunion on foot

Personally, I must say that Saint-Denis is not the best visit to Reunion. Admittedly, some Creole houses and colonial residences are nice as well as the large market, but it is not an extraordinary tourist town.

To get closer to the airport because the next day, we take off at 8am, I had booked a hotel in Saint Denis for our last night: Tulip Inn Sainte Clotilde

Only 6 km from Reunion airport, the hotel Tulip Inn Sainte Clotilde is absolutely correct. It offers a shuttle service at 20 € to drop you off at the airport even at 5am!

  1. Hello,
First of all, thank you for these wonderful photos and information!

We plan to visit Reunion in August 2024.

If I understood correctly, the buses run mostly during the day (difficult after 18 p.m.) and that there are little or no (?) services in places such as the area of the Mafate, Salazie and Cilaos cirques as well as 'at the Piton de La Fournaise volcano. So is it absolutely necessary to rent a car?

I hesitate to rent for several reasons… In your opinion, are there a lot of thefts, especially when a tourist leaves the car during a hike? Is it possible to rent a car without excess?
I look forward to hearing from you, thank you!

    1. Hello Christine,
Visiting Reunion following my tour requires, in my opinion, the flexibility, freedom and comfort of the car. But we met several couples who visited without a car by traveling by bus + long hikes. If you are sporty, you can consider this type of trip.
Regarding your question about flights. Frankly, we didn't feel insecure on the whole island. We had no trouble parking our car near the tourist sites or hiking trails and we had no problems.
      Bonne journée.

  2. Hello,
thank you and congratulations for so many beautiful photos and interesting sharing on the sites to visit. We would like to go hiking in November, do you think that's a good time? When you were hiking, did you leave your things in the car for the day? In short, I have so many questions…. Can we exchange by email?
    Thank you
    Dominique

    1. Yes November is an intermediate period between the dry season and the rainy season. I think it's a good time.
Regarding business in the car during the day, you will have no problem because I did not feel any insecurity and when we spoke with the locals, they confirmed that it is completely safe.
To exchange, I prefer via the blog's contact form because the information we exchange may be of interest to my readers.
Hope you understand, have a nice day!
