Go from Medellin to Santa Marta - D12

For this 12th day of our Colombia tour, we will unfortunately be spending most of the day in transport and in the Medellin airport. This is how we went from Medellin to Santa Marta in the region Colombian Caribbean. Then came to Santa Marta, a few small points of reference were necessary: where to withdraw money, where to eat inexpensively at Santa Marta ?

Our flight Medellin - Santa Marta

We had booked a departure at 11:40 with Avianca. Knowing that it takes about 1 hour from the city center of Medellin to get toJose Marie Cordova airport, we decide to order a taxi for 10:00. The trip will cost us 80 COP (000 Euros) which is very very expensive for Colombia!

But as in all travel, there are things that we do not master ... Indeed, we did not expect the flight to be more than 2h30 late. It is therefore at 15:40 p.m. that we land at Santa Marta under overwhelming heat.

The time to collect the luggage and find a taxi, we arrive at our hotel at 17:20 pm. Taxi from the Airport to the city center of Santa Marta cost us 29 COP (less than 000 €).

All day for a simple 2 hour flight! This is a good illustration of why I prefer (when possible) to travel by road with a private driver.

Cheap hotel in Santa Marta

We had chosen the Park Hotel on Carrera 1 n ° 18-67 which is located facing the beach. If the beach is beautiful, especially at sunset, you should not look to the right because in the backdrop you can see unattractive industrial infrastructures ...

But this hotel is very very well placed because in the heart of the historic center, shops, restaurants and various activities.

It is a somewhat dated hotel, of course, but with large, clean, air-conditioned and well-equipped rooms (TV, fridge, wardrobe, safe, etc.). Its small swimming pool is very pleasant because in Santa Marta it is very very hot!

As we had been given a room which did not correspond to the booking description, we requested another room. And there, bingo !!! They offer us a beautiful suite at no extra charge. And there, we tell ourselves that this hotel knows how to deal with tourists and that it is really the right plan!

Where to withdraw money in Santa Marta?

After our installation, 2 priorities: buy water et change Euros.

To buy cheap water (870 COP per 1,5 l bottle or 25 € cents instead of 3 COP in cafes or restaurants (000 €), we go to the supermarket EL EXITO Carrera. 5 n ° 19-20 10 minutes walk from our hotel. This supermarket is open every day even on Sunday.

In the gallery there is 2 ticket machines where we can withdraw our Euros (in front of the cash desks and in the little café to the right of the cash desks). This is where we will refill our portfolios.

Where to eat inexpensively in Santa Marta?

To eat fast and really cheap (for 1 or 2 Euros), you can take advantage of the Cafeteria upstairs of the Exito supermarket.

To next to the hotel, you are spoiled for choice because restaurants are everywhere with great prices and beautiful terraces facing the beach. We eat for 5 Euros but don't expect great gastronomy. It's “comida corriente” or pizza or fast food. We regret our trout on patacon from the coffee region ...

To eat inexpensively ten minutes from our hotel, we went to Caribbean wings  Calle 17 #2-59. The atmosphere is very nice, the dishes plentiful and varied. EAT CHEAP SANTA MARTA - Caribbean Wings Restaurant EAT CHEAP SANTA MARTA Caribbean Wings

To eat in the air conditioning good burgers or fresh salads, we discovered Radio burger Carrera 3 # 18-52 on the Park of Los Novios. In a setting dedicated to music, we appreciated being able to eat in the fridge (which we couldn't do on the terrace…). Well, it's true that it's fast food, but it's so pleasant to eat in the fresh when it's 40 ° C at 13 p.m.!

    1. Thank you Bernadette!
I haven't finished writing all the articles yet ...
I will continue with the days devoted to Park Tayrona, to the Cienaga grande de Magdalena (which I adored), to Minca, to Cartagena and to Mucura… a little more work and everything will be complete!
