Weekend in Strasbourg – Day 2 program
The Kammerzell House on Cathedral Square
My tour starts on the Place de la cathédrale with the visit of the Maison Kammerzell. Mr. Kammerzell was its former and very first owner. It is Martin Braun, a cheese merchant, who becomes its new owner in 1 and who completely rebuilds the 1571 floors of the house. The decorations on the facade are inspired by the Bible, Greco-Roman antiquity and the Middle Ages.
Church of the Temple Neuf
From the Cathedral Square, take Hallebardes Street then on the right there Rue des Orfèvres. Turning left you will see Temple-Neuf Church.
It is a Protestant church, attached to the Union of Protestant Churches of Alsace and Lorraine, located on the Grande Île de Strasbourg.
Strasbourg opera house
Continue right on Student Street which will take you to the Place Broglie where is theOpera.
The Strasbourg Opera (former theater) was built between 1804 and 1821 by the architect Villot. It is built in a neoclassical style with a facade adorned with a colossal peristyle with Ionic columns.
The Rhine Palace
As you head towards the Lezay-Marnesia quay, you will take the bridge that leads to the Republic Square where is the Palais du Rhin.
Former German imperial palace, this Palace bears witness to the political power of the integration of Alsace-Lorraine in the IIe German Reich. It owes its name of "Palace of the Rhine" to the installation in its buildings of the Central Commission for the Navigation of the Rhine (former European body).
Saint-Paul Church of Strasbourg
To get to Saint Paul Church, you have to take thePeace Avenue then right theVosges Avenue and again right on Zorn Pier. You will then turn left onto General Eisenhower Square.
Located at the crossroads of the Zorn and Mullenheim quays, on the banks of the Aar and Ill rivers, this former Protestant garrison church dates from the end of the XNUMXth century.
European Parliament
To go there, I advise you to take the streetcar. You have to go to the Gallia station (Victory Boulevard) to take the line E Robertsau L'Escale. After 5 stops to arrive at the European Parliament.
La visit of the hemicycle is free. All you need to do is show a valid ID and go through airport-like security checks.
Note that the European Parliament is closed on Sundays, on days when offices are closed and on public holidays. For schedules: https://www.europarl.europa.eu/visiting/fr/visitor-offer/strasbourg/hemicycle-during-plenary-sessions
Rohan Palace Museum
Return by tram to the Palais Rohan (line E, République stop).
The Palais Rohan will be the cultural stage of the day. Indeed if you have the time, why not visit one of the three museums that are in this magnificent monument (Musée Archéologique, Museum of Fine Arts et Decorative Arts Museum)?
Navigation on the Ill
Then my circuit continues with a walk on the water at the end of the day to enjoy the golden color of the evening ... Indeed, Batorama sightseeing boats offer all year round city tours in 70 minutes. Discover, while sailing on the Ill, the essential sites of the Alsatian capital and in particular the district of Petite France, the “Neustadt” or imperial district as well as the European institutions.
The pier is located right next to the Palais Rohan.
