All in the south of Laos, we discover in 2 days 4000 Islands which form a veritable archipelago in the bed of the Mekong upstream of the immense Khone Pha Pheng waterfalls.
How to go from Pakse to the 4000 Islands?
There are plenty of agencies that offer this trip by bus or van for little money. We chose the Pakse Travel Co agency which is located in front of the Friend Ship Mini Mark supermarket 2 minutes from our hotel. The trip (2h30 by bus + 30 minutes by boat) cost us around 6 Euros to the island of Don Khone where our hotel was located.

What to do, what to see on the 4 islands?
The many waterfalls and Khone Pha Pheng Falls nicknamed the Niagara of Asia are the main attractions of the site.
The other attraction of the 4 Islands is the observation of Irrawaddy freshwater dolphins that lie off Don Khone.
On the good advice of our guesthouse, we made a little excursion to the waterfalls very close to Don Khone (Khone long waterfall). On the way back, we observed a few dolphins and admired the sunset over the Mekong. A beautiful afternoon of discovery in solos (we were alone) for € 15 per person.
But what I appreciated the most about this site is the letting go and the reverie that the place inspires. Land, relax and meditate far from the tumult of cities and our daily lives ...
I will probably tarnish the picture but I must point out that these islands are, unfortunately, very very dirty. As soon as we approach the villages, refuse, plastic and all kinds of waste are scattered along the paths and even on the water. It is appalling and appalling to see such pollution ...
Where to stay on the 4 Islands?
It is the customer comments (rated 9,3 / 10 on booking.com) that convinced us that this is one of the most beautiful places to stay on the 4000 islands.
Indeed, in a magnificent setting with a breathtaking view of the Mekong and its islets, the guesthouse Pomelo Bungalow is the ideal place to rest.
On the other hand, if you have to choose a room, I do not recommend the one we had (the double room). Indeed, it accumulated the heat of the day and in the evening, it was difficult to fall asleep because it was so hot in the room (despite the fans). In addition, the room adjoining the bedroom was completely open to the outside and without mosquito net ...
Our friends had chosen the bungalow and seemed more satisfied than us! Here is the link to their accommodation:
