As a visitor or resident of Helsinki, urban safety has become a concern, particularly when choosing your accommodation.
With its peaceful streets, green parks and impressive architectural heritage, the Finnish capital enjoys a reputation as a safe and welcoming city.
However, like all major Western cities, crime is on the rise in some areas of Helsinki.
It is therefore important to remain vigilant and to know the risk areas in order to fully enjoy your stay.
So here is a detailed assessment of safety in Helsinki at the end of 2024, with the dangerous neighbourhoods to avoid and the safer areas to favour.

Is Helsinki dangerous?
Helsinki has a relatively low crime rate ( 24.46 ).
Moreover, the city is ranked among the safest in Europe (see the Numbeo ranking ). It is even less dangerous than Warsaw , Copenhagen or Vilnius.

Violent crime is rare and most reported incidents involve petty crimes such as pickpocketing or burglaries, rarely violent crimes.
However, crime rates in Helsinki have increased in recent years.
Along with Tampere and Vantaa, Helsinki is among the Finnish cities with the most notable increases in criminal activity. This upward trend has emerged since the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly in drug-related crimes, especially among young people.
Neighborhoods to avoid in Helsinki
Although most neighborhoods in Helsinki are safe, there are a few areas to avoid due to their higher levels of insecurity than others. These neighborhoods considered to be at higher risk are:
- Kallio : This bohemian and lively neighborhood is known for its bars and nightclubs, which can attract a number of people with malicious intentions at night.
- Sörnäinen : Close to the city center, this area can sometimes be a little more hectic, with incidents related to alcohol and drugs.
- Around Information : Although this mall is very busy, it may be best to avoid some adjacent areas especially during off-peak hours.
- Kontula : Often cited as one of the most dangerous areas of Helsinki although this perception may be exaggerated.
- Ore Manor, Information et Ore are also areas not recommended for a tourist stay.
- In the city center, Helsinki's red light district (Cleavage) is riskier at night due to the concentration of bars, bad crowds and sometimes overly lively nightlife.
Safe neighborhoods to stay in Helsinki
Among the many safe and pleasant neighborhoods, the historic center, Kruununhaka, Punavuori and Töölö are the best.
In fact, these areas offer many tourist attractions, restaurants, bars and shops, while being considered very safe.
- The center of Helsinki, with its pedestrian streets, shops, restaurants and tourist attractions, is generally very safe.
- Neighborhood Crown Haka is charming and quiet with beautiful buildings.
- Punavuori is a district rich in cultural life and has a lot of charm with its pretty houses.
- Work is a district home to many cultural and academic institutions.
Where to stay for a tourist stay?
To visit the city on foot, the best thing would be to stay in the center of Helsinki where the emblematic monuments of the capital are located, in particular:
- The Lutheran Helsinki Cathedral (Tuomiokirkko), a symbol of the city located on Senate Square.
- The Uspensky Orthodox Cathedral, which dominates the harbor and is considered the largest Orthodox church in Central Europe.
- Helsinki Central Station, a monumental building that is a focal point of the city.
- The Market Square, a lively place where various markets and boat trips to the surrounding islands are held.
Helsinki City Centre is not only a tourist spot, but also the cultural and economic centre of the city, offering a rich history and impressive architecture.
For a tourist stay in the center of Helsinki, the Kamppi district is an excellent choice, offering both safety and proximity to the main attractions.
Conveniently located in the heart of Helsinki, it is close to the central train station and well served by public transport. Many tourist attractions are within walking distance, such as the Parliament and the Havis Amanda Fountain. In addition, there are many restaurants, bars and shops.
Among the many hotels in this tourist area, I recommend the Scandic Simonkenttä (excellent value for money).
In fact, it is close to the main attractions of the city center, 200 meters from the central station and 400 meters from the Esplanaden shopping district.
