Krk, one of the largest islands in Croatia, attracts many visitors every year with its beautiful beaches, turquoise waters and rich historical heritage.

However, like any popular tourist destination, it is important to be aware of certain safety aspects to fully enjoy your stay.

In this article, we will check whether Krk is safe or dangerous and tell you which areas and neighborhoods to avoid in Krk.

Additionally, you will find tips and recommendations for places to stay for a safe and enjoyable trip.

Areas to avoid in Krk

Is Krk a safe island?

Overall, Croatia enjoys a positive safety record, with a particularly low crime rate compared to other European countries.

And Krk, just like Hvar , is a safe place for tourists. Violent crime is very rare there; the most significant crime consists of petty offenses, such as thefts of phones or handbags.

Overall, although low, criminal activity in Croatia is mostly concentrated in large cities such as Zagreb or Split.

However, in Krk mass tourism and large events and festivals can attract petty crime. One example is the Krk Fair (also known as Lovreceva), a large annual event held from 8 to 10 August and attracting thousands of visitors. The Krk Fair features musical performances, medieval workshops and gastronomic specialties. Visitors can experience medieval and Renaissance Krk by walking around the town.

Areas to avoid in Krk

Although there are no dangerous areas in terms of crime, there are some areas of Krk that should be avoided for a tourist stay:

  • The northwest of the island is an extension of Rijeka's industrial area and may not be as touristically interesting as other parts of the island. While it does have a port and a few beaches, it may not be the best choice if you're looking for the most scenic or enjoyable experience.
  • Malinska, in the northwest of the island, is home to the island's most famous nightclub, Club Boa. Avoid staying near this club as it can be annoying due to the nighttime noise level and bad company late at night.
  • Beach near Krk port is also an area to avoid. Although the view of the city is great, the water is not very clean due to the constant passage of boats and the access is a bit industrial.

Best tourist sites in Krk

The island of Krk offers a wide variety of attractions for tourists. Among the main tourist sites are:

  • Krk Town: Known for its culture, history and architecture, the town is home to the Frankopan Castle and the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary. The old town retains its ancient walls and medieval heritage.
  • Vrbnik: This wine town is one of the most beautiful attractions on the island of Krk. The historic old town is located on a rock about 50 meters high above the coast. The Klancic alley, only 40 cm wide, is one of the narrowest in the world. Taste the local dry white wine Žlahtina, produced only in this village and its surroundings.
  • Biserujka Cave: This is a 110-meter-long karst cave, located between Omisalj and Dobrinj. There are stalactites and stalagmites, and bones of a large bear that are 16000 years old.
  • Kosljun Monastery: Accessible by boat from Punat, this haven of peace includes a museum with ancient objects, traditional furniture and ethnographic collections.
  • Beaches: Most of the island's beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag for sustainable tourism, meaning they have facilities that minimize the impact of tourism, as well as safety and accessibility for swimming for all. The most popular beaches are Punat Marina Beach, Baska Beach and Vela Baska Beach.

Best areas to stay in Krk

Baska for the beaches

Baska is home to the most beautiful beaches on the island of Krk. The main beach, Vela Plaza, stretches for almost two kilometers and offers many amenities such as playgrounds, sun loungers, surf shops and pedal boat rentals.

The advantage is the magnificent view of the islands opposite and the immediate proximity of cafes, bars and restaurants. This beach is popular and very busy, especially in the central area.

But in Baska you can also access secluded coves accessible by trails, such as Skrinjica and Skulijka, which offer a more tranquil setting.

Here is the hotel I recommend, a 10-minute walk from the village: Hotel Dobrovit (direct access to the beach and swimming pool).
