Rotterdam, the second largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam , is a dynamic and multicultural metropolis. However, behind its perfect image, the city faces complex security challenges.
Between the rise in violent crime, concerns about organized crime, and ethnic disparities highlighted by recent studies, the feeling of insecurity is quite high.
In this article, we will examine the statistics and compare them with perceptions to unravel the truth from the lies about insecurity in Rotterdam.
We will see that behind its modern architecture and historic districts, there are neighborhoods to avoid in Rotterdam and some areas less recommended for visitors.
In addition, I tell you at the end of the article which are the best places to stay.

Is Rotterdam dangerous?
The main types of crime in Rotterdam are:
- Pickpocketing, bicycle theft and vandalism are common, especially in busy areas and tourist spots.
- Drug crimes: Rotterdam, as a major port city, is involved in drug trafficking, especially cocaine and synthetic drugs.
- Organized Crime: The city has seen an increase in organized criminal activity, including human trafficking, arms trafficking, and money laundering.
- Violent Crime: In recent years, the city of Rotterdam has unfortunately seen an increase in serious crime. In 2022, it had the highest number of murder and manslaughter victims of any Dutch city.
Despite this increase in serious crime, Rotterdam maintains a favourable position compared to many European cities.
In fact, with a fairly low crime index ( 27.84 ), Rotterdam is among the safest cities in Europe. It is even less crime-ridden than Madrid , Bucharest , or Vienna.
Neighborhoods to avoid in Rotterdam
While Rotterdam is generally a fairly safe city, some neighborhoods are best avoided because they are perceived as less safe than others. The most dangerous neighborhoods in Rotterdam, or those requiring increased caution, are:
Rotterdam South (Rotterdam Zuid)
Among the least safe neighborhoods in Rotterdam, the majority are located in the south of the city, including the following:
- Charlois : This neighborhood, especially areas like Zuidplein, Zuiderpark and Zuidrand, has higher crime rates than other parts of the city.
- Bloemhof, Wheat District, Africa and the Middle East et Pendrecht : These neighborhoods are mentioned as having social problems and are perceived as unsafe.
- Feijenoord with a high crime rate, including vandalism, burglaries, and pickpocketing. Social problems are also common.
Other areas to avoid in Rotterdam
Although not affected by violent crime, the areas mentioned below have problems related to petty crime, delinquency and social problems:
- The central station district The area around Rotterdam Centraal is known for its high levels of petty crime, particularly pickpocketing.
- spanking : This neighborhood has always had higher crime rates, although it is being redeveloped.
- Claes de Vrieselaan : Women in particular are advised to be careful in this area, even during the day.
- Marconi Square : This area is less safe at night.
Safest neighborhoods in Rotterdam
The districts to the north and east of Rotterdam are considered the safest for both residents and visitors, including the following:
- Kralingen : Known for its quiet residential streets and proximity to Kralingse Plas and Kralingse Bos parks, it has a low crime rate and a friendly community atmosphere, making it an ideal neighborhood for families and professionals.
- Hillegersberg This neighborhood is characterized by upscale residential areas, picturesque lakes, and green spaces. It is slightly removed from the city center, which adds to its tranquility and safety.
- Prins Alexander : Very family-friendly, with public spaces designed for children. It is close to the Erasmus University, making it an ideal area for students.
- Overschie This neighborhood has one of the lowest crime rates in Rotterdam. It is known for its safety and social cohesion, although connections to public transport can be limited.
Which area for a tourist stay?
For a tourist stay in Rotterdam, the city center is the best area to stay for the following reasons:
- Centrum is Rotterdam's historic district, located on the northern banks of the Nieuwe Maas, offering easy access to the city's main attractions: the Euromast, the Beurstraverse, the Beursplein, the Cube Houses, and the Markthal covered market.
- The center of Rotterdam was rebuilt after World War II, offering modern architecture with sometimes surprising curves, ideal for lovers of contemporary architecture.
- The area is full of bars, restaurants, cinemas, museums, concert halls and shops, offering a wide variety of activities and entertainment.
- The Centrum is well served by public transport, particularly with the central train station nearby, making it easy to travel around the city and to other destinations.
- The centrally located Witte de Withstraat is renowned for its trendy nightlife, cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants.
Be aware, however, that while Rotterdam Centrum is considered safe during the day, at night the area experiences public disturbances, theft, violence, and vandalism. Fortunately, during the day there is a strong police presence and a large number of security personnel, which significantly improves the safety of the neighborhood.
Among the hotels in the city center, I recommend staying at the Motel One Rotterdam . This hotel is ideally located for exploring everything on foot and by water taxi.
