For your upcoming trip to Brazil, you're wondering about safety in São Paulo. Which neighborhoods should you avoid, which areas are dangerous, which are the favelas, and which are the best areas to stay in?
It is true that Brazil is not the safest country in the world.
We will therefore check whether Sao Paulo is a dangerous city and which areas to avoid.
Sao Paulo dangerous city?
By the end of 2025, Brazil is among the most dangerous countries in the world. See my article: Is it dangerous to go to Brazil?
And Sao Paulo is one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil and South America.
According to the last Numbeo rankingSão Paulo is ranked 11th. In fact, it would be more dangerous than Buenos Aires, Bogota ou Medellin.
With a very high crime index of 70.63, Sao Paulo still remains less criminal than Lima, Fortaleza ou Rio de Janeiro.
But what must be highlighted is the regular decline in the level of violent crime that Sao Paulo records every year. See the explanations on World Economic Forum.
Unfortunately tourists who want to visit the city will have to exercise great caution and avoid the dangerous areas of Sao Paulo (see details below).
Where are the dangerous areas in Sao Paulo?
The majority of violent crimes occur in the outskirts of Sao Paulo which we will not develop below.
According to the latest official surveys, the most dangerous neighborhoods of Sao Paulo in terms of homicides are located mainly in the south of the city (see graph on infograficos.estadao.com).
That said, it is also in the southern part that the best neighborhoods of Sao Paulo would be found. Hence the interest in finding out about the area where you are going to stay.
To identify the neighborhoods to avoid in Sao Paulo that we will discuss below, this map can be enlarged to do your research: Google Map
Most dangerous neighborhoods in Sao Paulo
According to the latest crime figures, here are the 8 most dangerous neighborhoods in Sao Paulo:
Favelas of Sao Paulo
Just like in Rio, some favelas (especially at night) are to be avoided by tourists who have no interest in going there:
- Paraisópolis
- Ocupacao Boa Esperanca
- Taipas Park
- Heliopolis
- Vila Nova Jaguare
- Favela Do Radar
- Vietnam
- Alba favela
- Hot hole

Neighborhoods to avoid in the center of Sao Paulo
Here are some areas of Sao Paulo to avoid especially at night:
- Center of Sao Paulo: While it is in the central district of Sao Paulo that the majority of tourist attractions are located (Catedral da Sé, Municipal Theater, Galeria do Rock, the Praça da República market), there are an area that is best avoided. This is the area that forms a triangle around Praça da Sé, Praça da República and Praça Roosevelt. See location of this area
- Area to avoid around stations
- Area to avoid around the Tete metro station
Red light districts in Sao Paulo
The red light districts of Sao Paulo are not necessarily dangerous but it is better to avoid them at night because they are very poorly frequented. They are mainly located on Rua Augusta, Rua Frei Caneca and Rua Bela Cintra north of Avenida Paulista in the neighborhood Lower Augusta.

In which area to stay in Sao Paulo?
Fortunately, there are not only dangerous neighborhoods in Sao Paulo even if caution is required everywhere in the city.
Among the best neighborhoods in Sao Paulo, real estate agencies and professional blogs cite in priority:
- Vila Olimpia
- Consolation
- Bela Vista
- Paradise
- Vila Mariana
- Pinheiros
- Partridges
- Moema
- Santana
- Vila Madalena
Best neighborhood to visit Sao Paulo
For tourists, the ideal is to choose your hotel or rental close to the tourist sites of Sao Paulo. And for visitors, the most central and touristy neighborhood is Vila Madalena.
Vila Madalena favorite neighborhood for tourists
This neighborhood is renowned for being the center of São Paulo's bohemian culture and art, for its street art and for its vibrant nightlife. Location of Vila Madalena
It’s a neighborhood that has a soul. There are art galleries, boutiques, good restaurants and cool bars.
This neighborhood is quite close to the Centro Velho which is the historic center of Sao Paulo where the most emblematic sites of the city are located: Santa Sé Cathedral, Municipal Mercado, Municipal Theater, Mosteiro de Sao Bento, Museu Paulista, Republic Square , Museum of Arts.
But the center of Sao Paulo is also the business district which, with its huge skyscrapers, is much less attractive than the Vila Madalena district.
If you want to stay in the heart of the pretty Vila Madalena district, I recommend staying at the MADÁ hostel (cheap and well located):
If you want to stay in the center, I recommend: Hotel Cadoro Sao Paulo (650 meters from the Higienópolis-Mackenzie metro station) which has a very good value for money.
This study is a synthesis of information whose sources are verified: local press, economic media, studies, rankings and statistics.
Your memoir is captivating an exemplar of perfection.
Thank you!!!
I am from the UK
I have lived in Sao Paulo for 9 years
I drive for Uber, day and night
I know exactly where the good and bad areas are and where is safe for tourists
I agree with many of these sites recommendations but the areas to stay are a little wrong
Some of the safest areas are on the east side (zona leste), Formosa and Carrão are safe but boring, there is very little night life. Tatuapé is busy and a very nice area (just a bit north of Formosa) , it has many good clubs. If money is not a problem then the small bars and restaurants of Analia Franco (next to Formosa) are very nice and give a 5* service, also the shopping center in Analia Franco caters for higher end shoppers
Zona leste (east side) is only 20 to 30 minutes drive from the center of São Paulo and all the good areas have a metro link to the center
The problem with other areas is that you are always one wrong turn away from a dangerous area
I hope this helps
Thank you for these tips and information that will be very useful to my readers!
Hi Darren,
Thank you for this information. I am considering a holiday to Brazil soon, and am thinking of going to Sao Paulo. This information is very helpful.

We are visiting soon and your information is very helpful.
