Want to visit one of the most beautiful countries in the Middle East but you are wondering if Jordan is a dangerous country at the moment?
Indeed, I too asked myself all this question when I prepared my beau one week tour in jordan.
Indeed, Jordan is surrounded by so-called sensitive and, for some, even dangerous countries: Syria to the North, Iraq to the North-East, Saudi Arabia to the East and Israel to the South.
So, it is normal to ask if it is dangerous to travel to Jordan? Can conflicts in neighboring countries not have repercussions on Jordan?
Find out below the truth about insecurity in Jordan and its capital Amman in 2025. In addition, you will also find the list of places to avoid, recommendations for caution and advice for tourist behavior.

Jordan dangerous country?
In terms of crime and delinquency, according to the site Numbeo.com, Jordan is not one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
In fact, with a crime index of 39.9, this country is less dangerous than many European countries (France, Italy, Greece), from the American continent (Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, United States) or from Africa (Tanzania, South Africa).

Is it dangerous to go to Jordan now?
In 2025, apart from the risk of a terrorist attack, it is not dangerous to travel to Jordan.
Indeed, Jordan is a safe country, with a stable political situation, where tourists are very well received with a lot of kindness (I have experienced it).
However, it cannot be denied that the risk associated with sensitive border countries and terrorism is very real. This is confirmed by government recommendations from many countries: Canada, UK, Switzerland, United States.
In 2025, the French government also warns travelers on its website France Diplomacy :
« Jordanian security forces are mobilized to combat the terrorist threat and infiltration at the borders. It is necessary to remain attentive to the evolution of the security situation, to comply with the instructions of the Jordanian authorities. In areas far from the main urban centers, it is necessary to be accompanied and to report your movements to a third party who can contact the consulate in case of difficulty."
But unfortunately the risk of terrorism exists in many other countries that tourists continue to visit despite everything.
If, despite everything, you think it would be a shame not to visit this beautiful country, then find out below which are the dangerous areas in Jordan and the neighborhoods to avoid in Amman.
Areas to avoid in Jordan
The main areas to avoid in Jordan are in the north of the country near the border with Syria and Iraq.
Indeed, this long strip of several kilometers would be risky in relation to the potential presence of jihadists, conflicts and arms trafficking. However, the majority of tourist sites are located outside these dangerous zones. Even the main tourist sites in the North of Jordan (Amman-Jerash-Ajlum) are not located in hazardous areas (see map below).
As the situation evolves from day to day, it is recommended to consult the site directly and regularly: https://www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/conseils-par-pays-destination/israel-territoires-palestiniens/

The website of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs has published a map of dangerous areas in Jordan. The areas in red are strongly discouraged and in orange are areas that are discouraged except for compelling reasons:

Is Amman safe for tourists?
Yes, Amman is not a dangerous city for tourists. Indeed, when I stayed there for 3 days, I was able to visit the Jordanian capital on foot, without a guide and without any security problems. On the contrary, the Jordanians are considerate and very welcoming. We ate in restaurants without tourists just with the locals and we loved it. See how to visit amman in 1 day.
This is confirmed by the Numbeo ranking of the most criminal cities in the world where Amman is at the bottom of the table with a crime rate of just 37.56.
The crime rate in Amman is much lower than in many Western cities. There is some crime, but it is limited to pickpocketing, phone theft, and carjacking. As in all tourist cities, you just have to be vigilant and avoid certain areas.
Neighborhoods to avoid in Amman
Although Amman is a relatively safe city, the following areas should be avoided for a tourist stay:
- Area East of Amman : Infrastructure, limited access to public facilities and basic urban services and incomplete waste collection make this area an unsuitable place for tourists.
- Jabal Al Lweibdeh : Located to the west of the historic center, this beautiful cultural and authentic district is interesting for daytime visits but involves risks for staying there (see article on aa.com.t is).
- Le Al-Wehdat refugee camp south of Amman and Baqa'a near Ein Al-Basha on the Amman-Jerash highway (risk of tensions and demonstrations)
- Demonstration areas near the Al-Husseini Mosque in central Amman, in the Abdali neighborhood in front of the Parliament and near the U.S. Embassy in Abdoun.
Jordan, a dangerous country for women?
According to many travel blogs and forums, Jordan is not a dangerous country for women, especially those traveling alone. However, travelers must behave with dignity and comply with a few rules so as not to offend.
Indeed, Jordanians are respectful and well-mannered towards male and female tourists, so it is normal for tourists to be respectful and well-mannered towards them in turn.
How should women dress in Jordan?
This is the question posed by all tourists who want to respect the traditions, the Muslim religion and the Jordanian way of life.
In fact, in order not to offend and to better integrate with the population, women who visit Jordan must dress in such a way as not to show their bodies. No need to wear a veil or cover her hair. All you need to do is cover your legs, arms and avoid necklines.
Even in hot weather, it is still possible to dress in light clothes that cover the whole body.
I must say that I saw American and Chinese tourists in Petra who shocked me with their shamelessness and therefore their disrespect towards the Jordanians. It is an attitude that I condemn and deplore.
Where to stay in safe places in Jordan?
If you want to make the circuit of the most beautiful tourist sites, here are the hotels that I had chosen for my road trip in Jordan :
- Hotel in AMMAN – Al Houriat Hotel
- Hotel in PETRA – Edom Hotel
- Hotel in WADI RUM DESERT – dream camp (tents among the Bedouins)

Hello,
We are a French couple traveling with a van.
We want to come to Jordan and arrive by sea in Aqaba.
Do you know if there is a ferry between Aqaba and Europe or Turkey?
Thank you for your reply.
For yourself
Mrs. and Mr. Hautavoine
Hello,
Unfortunately, there is no sea connection between Aqaba and Europe.
There is also no ferry connecting Aqaba to Turkey.
There is a longer alternative: Take a ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba in Egypt.
There is a ferry connection between Aqaba and Nuweiba in Egypt with AB Maritime Ferries Company.
Then travel from Egypt to Turkey but this is not at all recommended in terms of security given the countries you have to cross.
From Turkey you have two options to enter Europe:
Cross the Bosphorus in Istanbul to enter Bulgaria or
Take a ferry from a Turkish port (eg Çeşme) to Greece
Hoping to have answered your questions, I wish you an excellent day.
