CANDELARIA DISTRICT

This is the neighborhood that all tourists visit. Indeed it is the historic center in which are the museums, the old houses of baroque and colonial Spanish style, the colored alleys, the beautiful churches… This district is part of the SANTA FE District (BOGOTA city center) for which I wrote the following article:

SANTA FE

Opinion on the district of LA CANDELARIA

From what I have read, you have to go there only during the day. Indeed, it would be a dangerous neighborhood in the evening and at night. So, I eliminated this place for my search for hotels.

On the other hand, I put it in number 1 neighborhoods to visit in BOGOTA.

What to see at CANDELARIA?

Here are the places I plan to visit:

- THE PLAZA BOLIVAR which is the historic place of BOGOTA and all around:
  • Lievano Palace (Bogotá Town Hall)
  • Courthouse
  • The seat of the Congress of the Republic of Colombia
  • PRIMADE Cathedral
- BOTERO MUSEUM : Donación Botero, Calle 11 n ° 4-41 +57 1 343-1331. For his collection of paintings by Colombian artist Botero but also for works by Picasso, Renoir, Monet, Dali and others.
- GOLD MUSEUM : Museo del Oro, Calle 16 No. 5-41 (on one side of Parque Santander), +57 1 284-7450. For its impressive collection of gold and pre-Columbian objects from Colombia and neighboring countries.

CANDELARIA Tour by Bike?

Possibility to visit the most important sites of the Candelaria with Bogota Bike Tours, Carrera 3 Tel 12-72 +57 1 281-9924, e-mail bogotabiketours@gmail.com. At Museo de Oro Transmilenio station, you have to walk two blocks south, then go up to Carrera 3.

Twice a day, four-hour bike tours to the center of Bogotà, departing at 10:30 am and 13:30 pm. This bike tour allows you to learn about the history and culture of the Colombian capital, taste exotic fruits, see graffiti, and visit places off the beaten track that you probably wouldn't see on your own.

How to get around the CANDELARIA district?

Le transmilenio , Candelaria has two J ZONE stations: Museo del Oro and Las Aguas. The stop at the Museo del Oro would be the most convenient for visiting the surrounding area on foot.

Where to eat at CANDELARIA?

After sightseeing, my interest is in restaurants. Indeed, I think that gastronomy and everything that revolves around it (the way of eating, street food…) is part of the culture of a country and sometimes even of a city.

However, so as not to be trapped by tourist restaurants, I look in advance for some good addresses that could satisfy my curiosity but especially my taste buds! I'm looking for cool places (but the setting does not matter) to eat local, not too expensive and having good reviews on blogs and on tripadvisor.

Cheap restaurants in LA CANDELARIA

I selected 4 addresses knowing that it will only be for lunch because I will certainly not go to dinner in such a dangerous and poorly frequented area in the evening. On my return, I will comment on those I would have had the chance to test.

  • RICA SOLE: Carrera 4 # 12C-54 La Candelaria +57 1 473 99 20. I chose this restaurant for its traditional “picadas”. These are delicious traditional Colombian mixes of small pieces of fried meats, chicken, sausages, potatoes and cassava. Served on a plate which is normally sufficient for 2 people. Eat with a toothpick and dip it in the spicy or herbal salsa;
  • EL FOGON DE LAS SOPITAS: Calle 12 n ° 8-38, La Candelaria (in a sort of shopping center) +57 319 493 7589. Restaurant specializing in soups. I selected this restaurant to taste the traditional “ajiaco” or “Sancocho” with the chicken. All soups come with rice, avocado, soft drinks and, yes, yes, yes !!! a banana that you can mix into your soup. Rated 4,2 / 5 out of 42 Google reviews;
  • PASTELERIA FLORIDA: Carrera 7 n ° 21-46, La Candelaria. To taste a typical hot chocolate in an old confectionery. But the santafereño hot chocolate cup is actually a plate. Cassava bread, cheese bread and wheat bread accompanied by butter, cheese and marmalade and - of course - a cup of hot chocolate. Traditionally, you dip bread and cheese in chocolate. Some even break the cheese into small pieces and leave them inside the cup to melt and let the flavors mix… I think I'll try this great place to have a HUGE breakfast that will double as brunch;
  • HENRY COMIDA RAPIDA (to eat quickly, but not at MacDO!) Carrera 1 and Calle 19 (in the Plaza of the University of Los Andes). Fast food restaurant where you order a godzilla and you'll be served with what is arguably the biggest empanada on the continent!

  1. Good morning ! A very good Franco Colombian restaurant: Sant Just calle 16A # 2-73. The owners are French and the glass of wine is cheap!
