Here is the program for our 4th day in Java.
Itinerary from Yogyakarta to Bromo Volcano
In any circuit, there are TOP days and FLOP days… Day 4 will not be remembered as a highlight of our Circuit in Indonesia. Indeed, the DAY 4 will be devoted entirely to drive from Yogyakarta to Bromo volcano.
How to get to Bromo Volcano from Yogyakarta?
Go to Bromo Volcano by train?
I had inquired about the different routes and here is the information collected in particular on the site 12go.asia.
From Yogyakarta, you have to take a train (8h journey) to Probolinggo which is about 45 km from the Bromo volcano. The price is very interesting: 13 Euros in business class!
Reached Probolinggo, you must then take a minibus to Cemoro Lawang (the closest village to Bromo volcano). With the waiting and loading time, this solution is very long and tiresome! That's why I chose another solution ...
Going to Bromo volcano by car?
When I organized the tour, after reading negative reviews about the train ride, I thought it was better to take a private driver.
So to get up to Tosari (village very close to BROMO volcano), we drove 12 hours in an air-conditioned mini-bus with our guide Daus. Admittedly, it was very very long but surely more comfortable than the train that should have been combined with the bus ...
We found that it was difficult to navigate by car in Java. Our driver did not have a GPS and was wrong several times. He was forced to ask locals for directions on several occasions. In addition, the state of the roads slowed us down a lot.
Arm yourself with patience if you plan to take this route. Adventure is not only at the foot of the BROMO volcano but also on its way!
Where to sleep cheaply near the Bromo volcano?
For this short night (arrival at 23:00 p.m. and up at 3:00 a.m.), I chose the HUNI RAYA hotel in Tosari.
cf. link https://www.booking.com/hotel/id/huni-raya.fr
It was the cheapest hotel among the closest to the viewpoint for sunrise on the Bromo volcano.
The hotel is not great (old, smells of damp, dirty…) but for a night in this isolated place, you have to compromise (price: 19 Euros without breakfasts). As the hotels are few near the volcano, I advise you to book as soon as possible because they are quickly full ...
Please note : no restaurant in the hotel or in the surroundings, you will therefore have to plan a snack for the evening, especially since the next day, the departure for the sunrise on the Bromo is at 3:00 am on an empty stomach ...
Breakfasts will be served on our return from the Bromo when collecting the luggage.
