AROUND UBUD: PENGLIPURAN - KEHEN - RENDANG RICE FIELDS - DAY 8

For this 8th day of our Circuit in Indonesia, we will stay around UBUD for a varied and colorful program of visits!

Our program of tours around Ubud

Today we have planned the following visits: Penglipuran villageKehen templeRendang villageRendang rice terraces.

These excursions will require devoting a full day to them but at a relaxed pace that allows you to enjoy the places and restaurants without looking at the watch!

Here is the map of the route to take in one day to visit the surroundings of Ubud:

Places to visit around Ubud

Penglipuran Village

Price: 30 RP or around 000 Euros per person

Departure for the Bangli region to visit the Penglipuran village. It is one of the oldest villages in Bali (built around the 700s) and still adheres to ancestral customs and culture now lost elsewhere. It is a very interesting place to discover: a bit like a living museum because it is still inhabited ... The ideal is to go there very early in the morning because from 10:00 am, the tourist buses disembark and pollute the area. beautiful village!

What worries me a little are the souvenir shops which have been set up inside the village and which spoil the “authentic” side of the site. But on the other hand, it allows the Balinese to continue to live in this small traditional village and therefore bring a little life, animation and conviviality!

Kehen temple

Price: 15 RP or around 000 Euro per person

Then we continue to Kehen temple ; one of the most “vibrating” temples in Bali, a temple celebrating death (pura dalem): the Pura Kehen. Built on 3 terraces, the temple dedicated to Shiva is inhabited by a hundred statues (barong, elephants, dragons, turtles), each more beautiful than the next. The visit takes 20 minutes but we enjoy contemplating the work of sculptor artists and being inspired by the waves or spirits that roam…

A little practical information: if you have a sarong, remember to take it to wear it because it is almost compulsory… but know at the entrance, with the price of the ticket, you will be lent one to visit the temple.

Lunch at the Rice Terrace café restaurant

Lunch in a local restaurant with a view overlooking the valley and the rice terraces at the Rendang village. Nice menu of Indonesian dishes but also international dishes.

Meal a little more expensive than the average in Bali but the view of the rice fields is breathtaking !!! When we are seated at the table, we do not discuss with our neighbors, we do not watch the dishes arriving, no… we contemplate the spectacle of a magnificent landscape in front of us!

Count around 6 Euros for a dish + drink for lunch.

Dinner at Melting Wok Warung restaurant in Ubud

For the evening, I had booked at the restaurant the Melting Wok Warung at UBUD: a must when you are in Ubud. It is in the street of the market.

As a main course, I recommend the chicken or fish curry with coconut milk. Then finish with their dessert specialty: crème caramel with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (see below). But the best is the coconut syrup pancake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. I still salivate! The price is very reasonable because it is around 5 to 8 Euros for the full evening meal (main course, dessert, drinks).

This restaurant is so popular that it only takes reservations. So do not hesitate to send them a little email to be sure to have places ...

    Hello,
thank you for your site and the explanations
We are a family of 5, with teenagers and will be in Ubud this summer for a few days then we will go east and west…
I have a question, it's how to get around the island: rent a car? take a driver for the day?
Thank you for your help and your answers.

    1. Hello,
Personally, we were 5 (2 couples + 1 friend) and had booked a guide + driver which is very practical and relaxing. As we had shared the costs, it was interesting for us. It's up to you to compare because the prices must have increased a lot.
You can contact our guide to ask him the question:

I wish you a very nice trip in advance!
