How to get from the 4000 islands to Siem Reap?
We chose the AVT company which was the fastest and safest option for this one day road trip. They offered us 2 options: by bus (public mini van) or by private van.
Go from the 4000 islands to Siem Reap by bus (mini van)
It is surely the most economical solution but also the longest (allow 10 hours of driving).
From 4000 islands to Siem Reap by bus - Route description
If we want to go by Don Det or Don Khone in Cambodia, we can go by ourselves directly to the border. AVT explains by email step by step how to get from the 4000 islands to the Cambodian border. It is relatively easy because only at a distance of 20 km. After the border, a minibus or a van awaits us and brings us directly to Siem Reap.
An AVT representative is waiting for us at the border and guides us to board the van to leave the border at 11:30 am, then at 14 pm: 10-minute stop at Stung Treng and arrival in Siem Reap around 19 pm.

Payment for the ticket is made at the border in Khmer Riel cash, Laos Kip or in USD dollars. The price is 20$ per passenger.
Go from the 4 Islands to Siem Reap in a Private Van
This is the solution we chose since we were 2 couples and we divided the price by 4!
From 4 islands to Siem Reap by private van - Journey history
- Departure from our Guesthouse at 8 am.
- Then the journey from Nakasang village to the border is 30 minutes, then it takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour to cross both borders.
- Then a 1h30 drive from the border to the 1st “toilet stop”;
- Then from Stung Treng to Siem Reap, it takes 5 hours by road. I.e. 8 hours of travel in total.
From 4 Islands to Siem Reap by Private Van - Price
We paid 320 USD all inclusive for 4 or 80 € per person. It's a bit pricey but so comfortable and worry-free!
